Award for film about borders and climate change

What happens when a whale swallows plastic within the borders of one nation, but washes ashore in another country? Who is responsible?

Humans have shaped the borders of the world, but global problems connected to climate change cross borders very easily. Do nations have responsibilities outside their borders? What is the point of borders if they make problems in stead of solutions?

Leidar recently added powerful digital and video capability to its team in Norway through the acquisition of “Snøball”, a 17 person strong team dedicated to animation, video, film and digital campaigns. Now the team has been awarded a prestigious award. The English version the movie Borders won the Deauville Green Awards 2018 in the category Fight and Adaptation to Climate Change.

Borders is one of three films for the digital education “På Høyden – vocational education in basic Norwegian for minority language youth”. The target audience for the film is minority-language youth in elementary school.

In this poetic animation film, universal questions are asked about how we have divided the world into nations and created both natural and unnatural boundaries. How do we solve problems across these borders? The film uses a cute and playful whale as a recurring figure, which crosses borders freely, becomes ill and ends up stranded on a beach with several nations’ flags in its abdomen. Who is responsible for the ocean between borders?

The authors of the digital learning tool felt that through their experience, movies would be well suited to trigger discussion and involvement, especially on topics that might be difficult to talk about amongst different cultures and nationalities.
